Why the presets set pixels, not just shape
Getting the aspect ratio right is only half the job. A YouTube thumbnail that is the correct 16:9 shape but only 400 pixels wide will look soft on a television, and Instagram will re-compress anything larger than it needs. Each preset here sets both the shape and a sensible pixel size for that use. Platform guidance changes without notice, so check the current specification if a size has to be exact.
If you only care about the shape, pick a ratio from the row above instead and the crop keeps your original resolution.
About passport photos
The 35×45 mm ratio here matches the standard used across most of Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and much of Asia. The United States uses a square 2×2 inch photo, which is the 1:1 preset.
This tool handles the framing. It does not check the rules that actually get photos rejected — background colour, head size within the frame, expression, glasses, shadows. Read your own country's requirements before you submit, because a correctly cropped photo that breaks those rules will still come back.
Common questions
Does cropping reduce quality? Cropping itself removes pixels but does not degrade the ones that remain. Saving as JPG re-encodes them, which loses a small amount — at 92% that is not visible. Choose PNG if you want it mathematically lossless.
Can I crop several images at once? Not here, because a crop is a decision about one specific picture. If you want the same rectangle applied to many files, use the bulk resizer instead and set an exact size.
Why is my selection snapping? Because a ratio or preset is active. Choose Free in the ratio row to drag any shape you like.
Can I use this with no internet? Yes, after the first visit. The page, the cropping tool and the encoders are all stored on your device, so you can crop and save with nothing connected. That is worth knowing if you are preparing a photo somewhere with no signal and it only needs to be the right shape.
